Wall Street leaned defensive on Monday, with the S&P 500 down about 0.6% in afternoon trading as firmer oil, rising Treasury yields, and fresh headlines out of the US and Iran pushed money out of risk. The loudest single story of the day came from a boardroom, not a data print.
Stock Market Today: A Broad but Orderly Pullback
In Monday afternoon trading the S&P 500 sat near 7,700, off roughly 0.6%, with the Nasdaq down around 0.6% and the Dow lower by about half a percent. The small cap Russell 2000 held up a touch better, down roughly 0.4%. The clearest tell was the VIX, the market's fear gauge, which jumped about 7% back toward 16. That is not panic, but it is a market asking for a little more protection than it wanted on Friday.
Energy was the one green corner. With crude firmer, Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX) both drifted higher while the rest of the tape sagged.
What Moved the Market Today
Three macro threads did most of the damage. Oil pushed higher, Treasury yields climbed, and geopolitics crept back into the conversation. Together they revived the worry that the Federal Reserve may keep policy tight for longer than the bulls want. When yields rise, the richest growth names tend to feel it first, and that is roughly how the session played out.
The MongoDB and Meta Shock
The day's marquee move was a talent grab. MongoDB (MDB) sank about 16% after the company said chief executive CJ Desai was leaving immediately to become Chief Enterprise Platform Officer at Meta Platforms (META). Dev Ittycheria, who ran MongoDB from 2014 to 2025, steps back in as interim CEO, and the company reaffirmed its guidance ahead of an investor day on Tuesday.
Meta did not escape either, falling close to 4%. Investors read the hire as another sign that Meta intends to spend aggressively to build an enterprise platform, and after a year of heavy AI spending, the market is in no mood to reward a fresh cost story. One executive, two large moves, in opposite directions for very different reasons.

Under the surface this was a stockpicker's tape, not a uniform selloff. Nvidia (NVDA) was the lone large cap winner, up about 2.2% and once again acting as the market's designated safe haven for AI exposure. On the other side, Tesla (TSLA) dropped roughly 3.4% after JPMorgan trimmed its price target and pointed to soft third quarter deliveries.
The rest of the megacap group drifted lower in a tight band. Apple (AAPL) eased about 0.5%, Microsoft (MSFT) slipped near 1%, Amazon (AMZN) fell close to 1.2%, and Alphabet (GOOGL) was down a fraction. JPMorgan (JPM) itself lost about 1.8% as higher yields pressured the banks.
Movers Beyond the Giants
Away from the headline names, the tape had its usual fireworks. Kodiak Sciences (KOD) ripped higher by more than 170% on enormous volume, the kind of biotech move that rewrites a chart in a single session. AMC Entertainment (AMC) tacked on roughly 13%, a reminder that the meme trade never fully sleeps.

My read is that this was a macro day, not a growth scare. Nothing about oil firming or yields ticking up changes the earnings power of the best businesses, and the fact that Nvidia rose while the index fell tells you buyers are still discriminating rather than dumping. I would treat it as a HOLD across quality names and watch two things into the close and into Tuesday: whether yields keep climbing, and what MongoDB says at its investor day, since that will set the tone for how the market prices the Meta enterprise bet. A break higher in oil or the ten year yield is the scenario that would turn a mild pullback into something that deserves more respect.
