What is compound interest?

Compound interest means that the interest you earn in one period is added to your principal, so in the next period you earn interest on a larger base. This creates exponential growth: the longer your time horizon, the more dramatic the effect.

Which rate should I use?

The Ibovespa, Brazil's main stock index, has historically returned roughly 12%/year in nominal terms over long periods. The CDI, the interbank interest benchmark, sits around 11% and tracks the Selic rate. The poupança (savings) pays about 6%, while inflation (IPCA) has run near 5%. Nominal Brazilian returns look high next to US figures mainly because inflation is higher, so compare real (inflation-adjusted) returns when planning.

Itaúsa S.A., through its subsidiaries, operates a banking institution in Brazil and internationally. It operates through Dexco, Itaúsa, and Other segments. The company offers credit products, credit cards, asset management, investments, private banking, insurance, pension plans, and other financial services to individual and corporate clients.
