What is compound interest?

The Ibovespa, Brazil's main stock index, has historically returned roughly 12%/year in nominal terms over long periods. The CDI, the interbank interest benchmark, sits around 11% and tracks the Selic rate. The poupança (savings) pays about 6%, while inflation (IPCA) has run near 5%. Nominal Brazilian returns look high next to US figures mainly because inflation is higher, so compare real (inflation-adjusted) returns when planning.
